Bo Diddley and his band – 1965

Bo Diddley was one of the first American male musicians to include women in his band: Norma-Jean Wofford, also known as The Duchess; Gloria Jolivet; Peggy Jones, also known as Lady Bo, a lead?guitarist (rare for a woman at that time); Cornelia Redmond, also known as Cookie V and Debby Hastings, who led his band for the final 25 years of his performing career.

Good info, but it’s important to clarify that the guitarist seen in these wonderful gifs here is Norma-Jean Wofford – the Duchess – who was in Bo’s band from 1962-1966 and played rhythm guitar. Lady Bo was only in his band until about 1962, but she was the first visible woman guitarist in a rock band (who joined Bo’s band in 1957).?

I’ve seen many people mix up the Duchess and Lady Bo, especially those who aren’t familiar with Bo Diddley’s legacy and just see a?“female guitarist” and equate the two, so it’s important to clarify who is who, the years/times they appeared in Bo’s band, and their respective roles and contributions.?

Speaking of which, since I only mentioned the Duchess and Lady Bo, I personally wasn’t familiar with any of the other women included in his band (I include myself in the group who’s unfamiliar with Bo Diddley’s lengthy legacy but one can always?learn!), so here’s some info on them: Gloria Jolivet aka Gloria Morgan (x,?x), Cornelia Redmond or Cornelia Redmond-Chavez aka Cookie V (x, x), and Debby Hastings (x, x)

The backing vocalists in these awesome gifs are Gloria Morgan (aka Gloria Jolivet) and Lily?“Bee Bee” Jamieson.
